Technology and machines share the future of work with humans

Imagination has always played an essential role in human evolution. In many cases, it has become a reality that we live in. Until the term “#science_fiction” spread, which is based on speculative scientific discoveries and others, starting in the year 1898 AD, since then a large number of novels have been published in addition to the production of films showing the solutions of artificial intelligence and robots to replace humans at work, which has generated human societies suffering from poverty. And deprivation. With the development we are witnessing at the technological and technical level in our present world, which has led to #digital_civilization dominating many areas, #artificial_intelligence has become a major contributor to business and the economy, especially in developed countries.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the idea of mechanizing human functions first appeared in the sixteenth century with a person named William Lee, who modified the looms used in carpet manufacturing to be able to make long fabric that could be cut and turned into socks. Although the machine that Lee used contributed to reducing costs and increasing production and became the basis for the development of other textile machines, the impact of his invention remained limited on a large scale. In the 1880s and early 19th century, hundreds of years later, textile workers faced greater changes, but they were not alone this time. With the acceleration of the industrial revolution and the movement of people from rural communities to cities, steam-powered machines began to perform the tasks of craft workers and contribute to unprecedented growth in the manufacture of many products. Machines also showed greater effectiveness than humans in increasing agricultural yields through their use in all… From sowing seeds and harvesting crops. This sparked protests by some workers in Britain, who broke machines used in industry for the first time in 1811 AD for fear that they would replace them at work, according to history.com . However, the #Industrial_Revolution continued with greater momentum. The mechanization of work spread in the twentieth century, mainly in automobile factories, until it became involved in all facilities today. It is natural for workers to fear a rise in the unemployment rate in the future, especially after reviewing the jobs that machines and artificial intelligence have replaced or will replace humans. Including assembly lines in factories, especially after the availability of smarter and less expensive robots without the need for technicians to program them and perform the required tasks, drivers of public cars, buses and locomotives, which have begun to turn to self-driving, marketing, i.e. (marketing) via telephone, and reception jobs , which have begun to turn into Automated through voice recognition and speech synthesis, cashiers in stores who are being replaced by self-checkout boxes, tellers in banks as it has become possible to deposit and withdraw via automated teller machines, packaging and transporting goods in warehouses where Amazon has taken a leadership position in the use of robots. To perform these jobs, technicians in pharmacies have been replaced by robots to give prescriptions, programs to collect and analyze information and conduct research, journalistic work as many agencies have relied on programs to collect information and write articles, autopilots, postal workers, robotic doctors and surgeons, and many other jobs.

Despite the ability of #artificial_intelligence and technological progress to carry out some tasks, it cannot perform jobs that require human qualities such as strategic thinking, conflict resolution, the ability to negotiate, and emotional intelligence. The most prominent of these jobs include human resources management, computer systems analyst, education, professional sports, lawyers and judges, writers, CEOs, party organizers, politicians, in addition to doctors and psychotherapists. Jobs must emerge that will result from technical development. Previous experiences have shown that the industrial revolutions that occurred have contributed to the creation of new jobs that did not exist before. This is the trend that the labor market is taking with the growing dominance of digital civilization. Perhaps the contribution of #technology to the continuation of work due to the Corona pandemic, and the provision of the opportunity to work remotely, which contributed to reducing economic losses at the global level, has accelerated the necessity of adapting to the requirements of the new labor market.

In a report published by McKinsey on February 18, 2021, about the impact of the pandemic on working life and the high demand for #e-commerce and automation, which contributed to an increase in the percentage of workers who may need to change the professions in which they work by 25% more than was expected before the pandemic. The report also indicated that the jobs that will be most affected in the future labor market are those that need physical closeness, and the report divided them into ten categories according to the employee’s need for physical closeness with co-workers and clients, the number of personal interactions involved in the work, and the nature of the work site, especially if it is internal. In this study, McKinsey presented a new model and point of view about the changes that will occur in the nature of work and their difference from what was previously accepted. Noting that “the health care sector scored 87 percentage points in terms of the need for physical closeness, while the personal care sector such as salons and gyms scored 80 points, while customer interaction in workplaces such as banks and stores scored 76 points, so the percentage decreased to 75 with regard to the sector.” Entertainment and travel, which includes restaurants and hotels. As for home care jobs, they received 70 points, as did the internal work sector in factories and warehouses, 68 points for office jobs in the main centers of companies, 65 points for the education and training sector, and 58 points for the transportation and shipping sector. And external jobs were such as maintenance. Construction and agriculture are the least affected by 54 points, noting that the jobs with the highest percentages will change the most after the pandemic.

“The mix of occupations may be changing, with weak growth in low-wage jobs,” McKinsey concluded in its report. Emphasizing “the great role that companies and decision makers must play by taking steps related to training and educating employees and qualifying them so that they can maintain their work in the future. The enormous ability that companies and governments have demonstrated in adapting and responding to the challenges imposed by the Corona epidemic must be invested in re-equipping the workforce in ways Aiming for a brighter future at the work level.”

Based on all of the above, it has become clear that functional changes have become affected by two basic factors, in addition to #technological_development, especially after the spread of #artificial_intelligence applications since the beginning of the year 2023 on a wide level among users and in various fields, and after the Corona pandemic, which contributed and accelerated reliance on automation and intelligence. Artificial. In order to maintain job opportunities in the future, a person must develop specific skills at the intellectual level, such as the ability to imagine, create, and find new methods of thinking and implementation. Analytical thinking will also play a prominent role in terms of the ability to adapt and take the initiative to present creative ideas. Leading figures will have the ability to find solutions. As for the social skills that will have a fundamental role in the field of work, they will include the person’s ability to communicate and control body movement and tone of voice to convey ideas in the best way, in addition to the ability to make decisions and make judgments, diversity, cultural intelligence and the ability to adapt.
