Following influencers and celebrities on social media platforms is common phenomenon in the modern era. With the increase in the popularity of these personalities and their continuous presence on social media   as beloved and ideal personalities with them sharing the most beautiful and best moments of their lives with their followers , who in turn eagerly and curiously await their posts and stories, expressing their support through their likes and resonant comments, and even sharing them on their electronic accounts and discussing them with their friends as if It concerns or concerns them.

However, the psychological effects of following celebrities can be both positive and negative. So we’ll take a look at some of the common psychological effects of following celebrity bloggers, influencers, and fashionistas.

 

Let us start with the positive side of this follow-up; As a result of following celebrities and influencers, some followers may feel excited and inspired by their success stories, in addition to motivation and hope in achieving their personal goals. They may also learn from their experiences and be inspired by them, which prompts them to develop themselves and achieve their personal successes, in addition to the fun and entertainment they may find.

However, following celebrities can also lead to negative aspects, including a feeling of dissatisfaction with the follower’s private life and the desire to imitate the lives of celebrities, believing that what they see expresses the reality and reality of life, ignoring that these people only show the bright and sometimes unreal side of their lives. And their privacy, and they hide the dark side, so the follower thinks that the life of celebrities is rosy, devoid of pressures and challenges, but what is published forms in the follower a mental image that celebrities enjoy an ideal life full of luxury, success, and wealth, and does not include any problems and difficulties. Which makes them feel frustrated and lose contentment with what they have, as they are the ones who work day and night and have the highest academic degrees and do not get half of what these celebrities get who may be lower in academic and cultural degrees and even social status than them. But individuals should remember that what is presented and published on social media is not a complete picture of reality, and it may be fabricated or embellished. In this case, it must be realized that the real life of celebrities also includes obstacles and difficulties, and reality may be completely different from what we see.

 

 

Furthermore, following the lives of celebrities may lead to excessive focus on outward appearance and superficial appearances, causing low self-confidence and increasing pressure to achieve unrealistic external aesthetic standards. Accordingly, individuals may be exposed to eating disorders or low self-esteem due to constant comparison between themselves and the ideal appearances on display with high aesthetic standards that are difficult to reach, which constitutes conflict and pressure, especially for girls who may suffer from a disorder called “body image distortion,” which means the perception of a flaw. A congenital disorder that does not exist at all or is slight and unnoticed, which prompts them to undergo plastic surgery or exercise and strict diets to achieve the ideal body promoted by celebrities, intentionally or unintentionally. We should not forget that celebrities have an influence on young people in general and teenagers in particular. They follow their path in fashion and imitate them even if the fashion is not appropriate or beautiful. What most clearly illustrates this point is the spread of the fashion of torn pants, which have no beauty, no value, and no meaning. However, some people wear them to feel that they are… Up-to-date, modern, and keeping up with what his role model promotes.

 

Many people experience feelings of envy and jealousy as a result of following #bloggers. When they see the luxurious life, luxurious trips, enjoyable activities, and continuous achievements, some followers may feel hatred, jealousy, and envy, which are negative feelings that harm individuals’ physical, psychological, and mental health, due to their inability to achieve such luxury, especially since most followers barely secure a living.

 

As for values ​​and principles, following the lives of celebrities may expose them to disruption, especially among teenagers, such as the value of education, perseverance, and diligence. Some teenagers may feel that there are people who have reached the highest levels of fame, wealth, and luxury without making an effort or obtaining academic degrees. Therefore, some followers may promote the importance of studying, certificates, and making an effort to achieve dreams. They see that some celebrities who achieved their dreams and reached the highest ranks only stood in front of the mobile phone camera and broadcast some bright, beautiful, or funny aspects of their lives that led to them receiving likes and comments. Promotional offers and invitations to host on famous channels and programs.

This belief can create a psychological conflict and a false impression for teenagers that this is the right and easy path to success and happiness. But in reality, success requires effort, dedication, and continuous learning, and one cannot rely on quick fame and superficial phenomena.

In conclusion, we would like to point out that we are not against celebrities, but we are careful not to negatively impact the lives of individuals, but rather to help spread positive ideas if they choose purposeful and good content that contributes to correcting some of the misconceptions spread in societies and reducing the negative psychological effects on life and happiness.

 We, as followers, must control our consumption of information about the lives of celebrities and remember that we are responsible for seeing the world based on its reality and our personal goals. We are able to benefit from and be inspired by the experiences of celebrities without being negatively affected by their psychological effects. Let us all strive to achieve true success and happiness in ways that meet our personal goals and balance our lives.
